Petzl Swift RL Review

Night Hike

I recently completed a 3+ hour night training exercise at the LBJ Grasslands, the goal of which was an extensive field evaluation of the Petzl Swift RL Headlamp. The scenario was two lost hikers who were reported heading north out of TADRA and mentioned something about going to Cottonwood Lake. In addition to putting the Swift RL through both an operations and longevity test, I also introduce some of the other lights in my current loadout. I carry LOTS of light, including three headlamps. The backup serves as an alternate in the event of complete failure of or damage to the primary. The third headlamp provides illumination to someone who is lost and lacking light, but is otherwise able to move. I also carry a Fenix TK 22 UE, Nightcore NEO 2, Powertac E5, two visible strobes (alternate is a Neptune White/Blue/IR strobe), a Goal Zero mini-lantern, and 8-10 chem lights.

I purchased this headlamp from REI and was not contacted by or supported by Petzl in any way for the review. This was actually my fourth outing with the Swift RL and the final test to determine if the headlamp would make it into my loadout. Everything expressed on the video is a reflection of my own personal opinions, preferences, and observations.

What was the final result? You'll have to watch the video :)

The video is over 47 minutes in length and very in-depth.
